The whole Movie Store (iFlicks/iMovies, what have you) idea is too similar to the iTune's introduction, with the iPod, and those third-party music download sites that popped up everywhere all because of the "music store idea". Already, Amazon.com has a movie store, and I'm sure there are more to come/already out, but what these businesses are forgetting is that the reason iTunes was/and still is so successful was almost entirely because of the iPod, and its ultimate ease of accessibility with iTunes. Of course Movies are alot different than Music, but if Apple releases a movie-based (widescreen, easy upload, etc) iPod that has the same user-friendliness as it relatively did/does with music, these third-party "Movie Stores" are going to follow the same path of every attempted third-party music-download site to "over-do" iTunes, insofar that those businesses don't charge significantly less than Apple does. In all, Apple WILL release its Movie-ample iPod with the Movie Store or subsequently and immediately after the Movie Store opens, since there is every reason TO do so.

Well if they do launch it so soon, it probably won't replace the current iPods, but be a new highend model.
I agree, the 5.5 release is too soon to have it be a full replacement. Additionally it will likely be a lot more expensive and an unnecessary extra cost to those who don't need that functionality. Now the question remains however, will there be multiple capacities for the "true video" or just one large on?

So I'm told, but A) 3G phones are backwards compatible with old GSM networks. Mine switches between 3G/regular GSM constantly when I'm at home, as I live very close to a base station but far from the nearest 3G mast. Hence they should just stick a 3G 'sleeper cell' in there for (near) future use... and B) I respect that Apple is an American company, but they peddle their stuff all across the globe. Every little itty bitty iPod has 21 languages built in. When Apple Store closes down for maintenance it happens simultaneously all across the globe, and when it pops back online again the new products are available in all countries. Never in Apple's history have I seen them do something as US-centric as this - heck, we're not getting it until 2008! Strange, pretty damn alienating, and it had better not become a habit.
Apple's iPhone launch is no different from any other phone launch -- it appears to be going world region by world region. Europeans get all of the awesome new Nokia and Sony Erricson phones months/years before the US (assuming they make it here at all), so you're wasting your breath by complaining that the iPhone is coming to the US first to this American. I didn't find it fun getting (or paying for) the latest Windows Mobile device from eBay UK or Expansys because neither of the two GSM carriers here wanted it.

Since the quad-band EDGE iPhone Apple announced Tuesday would work quite well 'as is' on your overseas GSM network, I'd imagine that the delay to 2008 would be so that they COULD put in 3G for you. Properly. Not some crazy idea about a super secret 3G chip to be enabled later. Especially since your 3G runs on entirely different frequencies than the US.

or did i miss the step where you could record tv shows and put movies on it from your dvds ?
Not to threadjack this into an Apple TV thread, but the Apple TV appears to stream/store anything that can be played from in iTunes, and there have been ways to get your own TV shows and DVDs into iTunes for awhile now.

That's what Microsoft does. Copy Apple and make the copy so bad that Apple can't quite sue them. MS has been doing that for DECADES.
That's why I call MS "The Worlds Biggest Out-Of-Focus Copying Machine".

It's not good for consumers in the long run. We get stuck with expensive and inferior copies of Apple products. Yuck.

A Microsoft App Store is almost too hilarious a concept to think about. Thinking about it might make good therapy for depression but could have side effects related to excessive laughter.
If they're very lucky it will be Zune2.

MS has been focusing on Enterprise features? Odd. Our MS based computers at work are actually worse to use than Windows computers at home. Perhaps our IT guys are just being cruel?

    Have Fun.
    Keri

MS knows 5 things, more or less:

    1) How to extend boredom and bad software into the enterprise
    2) How to copy (poorly)
    3) Office suite rehashes
    4) Xbox
    5) How to ride the coattails of their universal licensing racket

For quite a long time now, the only thing MS has had left is empty talk. Lip service and blustery denial, i.e., tablets are a fad, Apple rounding errors, etc. All of these are excuses in the face of continued, embarrassing criticism. MS is all about excuses. Ever notice that? Whenever it's question period Ballmer always has an answer - even if it sounds batshit insane. Of course, excuses don't put insanely great products into consumers' hands (unless it's substandard copies three years later!) But that's OK. MS wil "get it right" eventually. We keep hearing that. Just give them time. Meanwhile Apple, at a fraction of the cost, redefines entire markets overnight. It's almost like business as usual at Apple: redefine markets and create new ones. Lead the way forward. So in other words: no waste. Money spent wisely. Which leads me to the next point . . .

Did you know that Microsoft has outspent Apple roughly 8-1 in R&D over the last decade? Yup. 8 to freaking 1.

And in that time - a decade, Apple has produced Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, lots of groundbreaking Mac models (multiple iMac versions, the iBooks, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, MacBook Air, Power Macs, etc.), iPod, popularized Podcasting, iTunes, iTunes Store, iPhone, iOS, Apple TV, the App Store, Mac App Store, and, of course their current game-changer: the iPad.

Microsoft, on the other hand, for 8x the money, has come up with: another back-asswards Mac OS X clone - a Windows rehash that they're trying to shoehorn onto tablets with varying degrees of failure, some bloated Office retreads, the Zune, Kin, Bing, and Windows Phone 2007. If it wasn’t for the Sony-inspired Xbox (Red Ring of Death included) and a Nintendo-inspired Xbox controller, Microsoft would have nothing but a string of failures to show for roughly 80 billion dollars. The ratio of R&D to revenue for both companies couldn’t be more telling. Of course, they put a lot of R&D into their Enterprise software. Which doesn't function any better today than it has years ago. We're still on XPee at work. So, of course it's all useless to us. It's hard to get excited about Exchange and Outlook.

That's right. $80 billion for a PlayStation clone, an accessory to make it work like a Wii, an also-ran search engine, and what’s left of Nokia.

Is it more funny than sad? I'm not sure.

Any random person picked off the street could have run Microsoft better during the last decade. Mind you, not that a lot of other CEOs are any brighter (here's lookin' at ya, Acer!)

Microsoft does two things really well, though: Retarded product names and waste. Add these to the other five above. The list still doesn't look any better.

    Cheers

    so guys,

does anyone think that the discounts will be able to be used in conjunction with educational discounts? if so that'd be great...if not...then i guess you still save an additional 50 bucks? that'd be ok!

tell me what you think about hte question?

In store you should be able to get both discounts.

Thanks for the passing insult however I think I was pretty clear that your use for it was one I hadn't considered and also a rare case that made this app actually useful. I apologize for recognizing your rare and interesting situation.

I think you're missing the source of the issue here. The problem you and vast majority of people commenting here have is that anything that doesn't apply to you or interest you is met with hatred and ridicule. Instead of apologizing for overlooking the one use you consider acceptable, apologize for looking down on everything you don't understand and accepting that most things in life have applicability to someone.

But hey, here's another example, from before your post:

haha this is as lame as a tv station bringing out a half hour of the most "unique" and "fascinating" ads, wow.

also, maybe if they were some good, funny ads it would be ok, but no. The ads shown in the pic are just "EAT MCRIB" and "MAYBELLINE"...

This person doesn't realize that iAds aren't just a banner, but can actually contain some pretty complex and varied app-like content. Maybe if they downloaded this they'd learn something.

While OS X was a huge step for Apple--and an absolutely critical one--I'd argue that it wasn't the *first* step in their turnaround. That role belongs to the original iMac. By the time OS X came around, more iMacs had been sold than all Macs for the previous several years, and every PC company was trying to copy it with some flavor of their own. It had also revolutionized the peripherals market by pushing USB from being a minor side technology to being the primary connectivity method.

Apple does not offer all of its own apps in the app store. Is Final Cut Studio in the app store?

I'm betting the net Final Cut will be though!

The 2011 Apple Design awards have become pretty meaningless.. last year OSX apps weren't, IRC, eligible, only iOS.

Here's a question: Would this IMovie store's movies work on something other than an Ipod, say, a PSP? If that happens you could kiss the UMD's goodbye COMPLETELY.

I liked it. I was happy with the update to the AppleTV - I think I'll finally get off the fence and buy one. The Capsule seems interesting. The MBA is outside of what I want to spend, but it's pretty awesome nonetheless.

It would have been nice to see updated specs on the Mini and other notebooks, but hey, you can't have everything! :)

i am going to get an iphone and i think Jobs has done a great job of apple. I believe that the iPhone is going to be a great hit and as someone said will once again steal some (or most) of the market for phones. Apple have used their brains once more and will be a success. All they need to do now is get some game designers and design a PSP like game machine. IF apple can make this game machine and make the computers sync and stuff like that apple will have it in the bag!

only if W8 had a 32bit flavor. Otherwise, no. Apple prefers one flavor. At any rate, Apples motivation is to sell hardware so the push to update is always there. MS only cares about software.

umm my computer from 2004 could run Windows 8 (slowly but it could) because it does have a 64 bit processor in it. I also believe W8 is going to be 64 bit only. W7 was the last 32 bit OS.

    Personal attacks are very mature.

I made an observation in a joking manner. But yeah, it probably does sting a little. ;)

It's Saturday night. I'm going out with friends to see some bands and then hopefully get sodomized later.

    What are your plans? ;)

Actually scrollbars look and behave exactly the same as they did before.

Whether they automatically hide or not is a preference, it has been since the first DP:

Same with reverse scrolling. Nothing at all has changed about scrolling or scrollbars.

Seriously...Gateway still sells computers? As I walk through campus I see: Dell, Dell, Mac, Dell, HP, Mac, Mac, HP, Dell...wait, what's that? Oh, one Gateway. Yeah, who buys Gateway computers anymore? I appreciate Apple passing them up soon.

they should allow users to like or dislike iAds to help cater the iAds that are sent to the user

Now this is a killer idea. Allowing users to activly decide what types of ads they see.

i just got back from the apple store in walt witman. It was packed...Their were a lot of mac books people were buying as well as ipods..
Apple should have instead of getting $100 off, they should have had a free ipod nano 2gb for $50....
(seems like a better deal to me)

The title of this is bad. It sounds like the problem has to do with contract negotiations with record labels. This in fact means that google is having trouble getting its itunes store competitor off the ground.

Itunes is the application for playing media and the itunes store is the business for selling media through itunes.

Itunes began without any store for purchasing music. You do not need to go to the itunes store to use itunes. The application imports music from CDs. Other audio and movie files can be added without visiting the store.

The store is just a convenience.

I'm sure google can make a media player to compete with Apple's itunes. The title of this thread should refer to the store, not the application.

As for the store, I don't understand why the record labels do not just advertise their own stores for music. They sell DRM free music files on itunes so why not on their own sites? And why not on other sites? What is the big deal? If I buy an mp3 file from sony directly I can put it in itunes.

Amazon does this. They sell you digital music and you can choose to put it in itunes or whatever application you choose.

I imagine the real issue is with the movies which still have protection in the itunes store.

Still, the movie companies sell digital movie files outside of itunes for itunes. On DVDs for instance you can get a digital copy and use itunes or other applications to unlock the file. Why do the movie companies not just open a store front of their own for this?

Bummer, I really liked the iOS-style scrollbars. My favorite thing about Lion is the inverted scrolling. It feels more natural on a touchpad once you get used to it.

I wonder what the hold up is with releasing this update? :o

Yeah man, I've been waiting too! I think I've checked software update more in the last 3 days than I have in the last year.

I wonder if 10.4.8 is required? There was a separate thread about 10.4.8 being close to done. As I understand it, the RAW conversion stuff is built into the OS, so I wonder if there's a co-dependency between the two updates.

Anyway, I'm hoping "this week" means tomorrow, not Sunday.
